On behalf of the Souther and White Scholarship Fund, the STC Puget Sound Chapter sponsors a scholarship of $1000. This year, Julie Ann Hiebert, a Visual Communication Technology student at Shoreline Community College, was awarded the 2016 scholarship.
Julie has worked as a project manager for web application content management systems and was often frustrated that she didn’t have the credentials or software knowledge to give input to front end development so that the end user can succeed in their task. This is what lead her to the discipline of user design and user experience.
In addition to pursuing a degree in UX and UI design, Julie has an interdisciplinary degree from the Minnesota College of Art & Design. She also has a long history as a lover of art and books and grew up visiting art museums and exhibits throughout the Midwest.
In Julie’s words, “My goal is complete the SCC program for the art & design of presenting content for a successful user experience. The web interface—its art, design, and function—is like reading a book. How the images are placed and how the words flow, help guide the user from page to page for a successful experience.”
P.S. Come hear Julie speak at a chapter meeting this fall and learn more about what she’s working on at SCC.
Here’s some history about the scholarships.
The scholarship fund was originally established in 1986 to honor two Society Fellows who made significant contributions to STC (at both the chapter and society levels) and to the technical communication community as a whole. Among their many accomplishments, James W. Souther and Myron L. White were instrumental in establishing the Puget Sound Chapter.
Students who are enrolled in the following approved two-year, four-year, and graduate programs in colleges and universities in the Puget Sound area are eligible to apply for the scholarships:
