We’re making a last-minute topic change to this month’s Chapter Meeting on September 19!
We are going to Network! Network! Network!
What does that mean, exactly, you may ask? Well, you’ve probably heard of speed dating, but we’re turning it into a night of speed networking. Your chapter president, Lin Laurie will facilitate the event.
Here’s how it works:
We’ll set up a circle of tables with seats on both sides. The inner circle will move every five minutes. Each person will have 2 ½ minutes to give their elevator speech about what they’d like to have in their next job, talk about their current job and what they like about it, or use the time to get to know their share partner better.
What you can do to prepare:
Bring lots of business cards to give them out when you want to connect with other people. You will want to use this time to gain as many cards as you can to use in later reaching out and contacting on LinkedIn. Vistaprint is a great, cheap resource for business cards that contain the basics: Your name, email, phone, and web site.
Ideally, if you do have a web site, it would contain a portfolio with examples of your work. A couple of other resources are Gotprint.com and Overnightprints.com. Either way, business cards are great to have on hand and will make you look more professional and polished for around a $10 investment. If you act right away, you still have time to get them before the meeting.
Bring several copies of your resumes, just in case:
It is better to come prepared, than to have to gather details and follow up later.
We hope you’ll join us and use this opportunity to get to know other chapter members, have some fun, and practice those skills that could land you your next employment opportunity.

A Final Challenge from the President
If you dread this kind of event, then this is the kind of event that will really make a difference to your professional development. There are a lot of good writers coming on the market shortly as Boeing is shutting down its documentation department in Seattle. This means there is about to become more competition for work locally. Feeling comfortable in your ability to speak with others about what is important to you about that next position is an important way for you to stand out above other candidates. And we all know that practice is what makes the difference in feeling comfortable about anything you do.
Please join us! We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday night.
